FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a freight broker and a dispatch service?
While both freight brokers and dispatch services help move freight, they serve different roles in the transportation industry.
A freight broker works as a licensed intermediary between shippers and qualified carriers. Brokers build relationships with customers that need freight transported, find carriers that can move those shipments, coordinate transportation, and manage communication throughout the shipping process. Freight brokers must operate under federal regulations and are responsible for connecting shippers with qualified transportation providers.
A dispatch service, on the other hand, typically works directly on behalf of a carrier rather than the shipper. Dispatchers help carriers locate available loads, negotiate rates, schedule pickups and deliveries, and manage paperwork or communication with brokers and shippers. Unlike freight brokers, dispatch services generally do not arrange transportation between shippers and carriers under their own brokerage authority.
At Buchanan Logistics, we operate as a freight broker, working with a network of qualified carriers to connect customers with reliable transportation solutions across a variety of freight types and shipping lanes. Our role is to coordinate freight movement, match shipments with approved carriers, and help ensure freight is delivered safely, efficiently, and on time.
Whether a carrier works with a freight broker, a dispatch service, or both depends on their business model and transportation needs. Many carriers choose to partner with freight brokers because they provide access to a broad network of shippers and a wide range of freight opportunities.
